  • 6 medium apples (Granny Smith or Cortland), peeled, cored and sliced
  • 2 tbsp. lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg powder

For the crust :

  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cut into small pieces
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Preparations

  • Preheat oven Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F).
  • Prepare the apple filling In a large bowl, toss apple slices with lemon juice, sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg. Make sure apples are well coated.
  • Preparing the crust In a separate bowl, combine the rolled oats, flour, brown sugar and salt. Add the cold butter and work it into the dry mixture with a pastry blender or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Assemble the croustade In a greased baking dish (9x13 inches), spread the apple filling evenly. Cover with crust mixture, pressing lightly so it adheres to the apples.
  • Cooking Bake the croustade in the preheated oven for 40 to 45 minutes, or until the top is golden and crisp, and the apples are tender.
  • Allow to cool Remove the croustade from the oven and allow to cool slightly before serving.
