Find out more about the origins of Poke Bowls

Native to Hawaii, poke bowls draw their influences from Japanese cuisine, but have evolved into a distinct dish that reflects the cultural diversity of the Hawaiian archipelago. "Poke" literally means "to cut into pieces" in Hawaiian, referring to the way raw fish is diced for this dish.

The history of poke bowls dates back to Hawaiian fishermen who prepared quick meals by cutting fresh fish into small pieces, which they seasoned with local ingredients such as soy sauce, sea salt, seaweed and kukui nuts. These bowls of raw fish became popular in Hawaii in the 1970s.

Over time, poke bowls have evolved to include a variety of ingredients and flavors, and have gained popularity on the international culinary scene. Today, a wide variety of poke bowls can be found, with variations including raw fish, seafood, grilled meat, vegetarian options and various sauces and toppings, reflecting the creativity and fusion of cultures that characterize modern Hawaiian cuisine.
