Step 1
Rinse basmati rice under cold water until the water is clear. Drain and reserve.

In a large skillet, heat oil over medium heat. Add the onion and sauté until it is golden.

Add garlic and grated ginger, sauté for a minute.

Incorporate chopped tomatoes and simmer until they become soft.
Step 5
Add all the spices: turmeric, cumin, coriander, garam masala, red pepper powder and salt. Mix well.
Step 6
Add basmati rice and mix until it is evenly coated with the spices.
Step 7
Pour water into the skillet and bring to a boil. Reduce heat, cover and simmer for approximately 15 to 20 minutes, or until rice is cooked and all the water is absorbed.
Step 8
Remove from heat and let rest for a few minutes before serving.
